Nationwide Women Strike in Mexico to Protest Femicide and Violence

On Monday, March 9, 2020 tens of thousands of women in Mexico vacated from classrooms and offices as part of a nationwide strike to protest gender-based violence and the lack of government action against it.

Femicide; a term defined by Oxford as the act of “killing of a woman or girl, in particular by a man and on account of her gender” has seen an increase in Mexico by 10 percent in just the last year. (nytimes).

Women were absent from workplaces across the country on Monday, and facilities run by women, such as schools and subway ticket booths, remained closed for the day.

Infuriated with the government’s inability to protect the female population, the women sang feminist anthems, held art performances in public plazas and delivered speeches while cheering each other on.

The nationwide strike estimated to have cost the economy $1.37 billion according to one of Mexico’s largest business groups. The women responded to the economic loss on Monday with signs that read: We apologize for the inconvenience, but they are murdering us.
